Making Beds

Danced with the rain a bit, but we finished the ground preparations for the red raspberry area today. Lord willing, planting will start next week. Forming the beds started yesterday and sowing grass finished up this morning. For a moment, we thought we’d have to stop, but the burst of rain was short lived and we pushed on. Some of you may remember that the strawberry beds were made with plastic on them, but for the raspberries here, we have made them bare so that the canes can grow throughout the bed making more of a hedge. Here are some pictures of the process:

Pear Tree Planting

Here are some pictures of this year’s pear tree planting. For the most part is shows the holes that were dug and the size of the area that was planted. In the last picture, it is a little hard to see, but it shows some of the trees that were planted. We will post some pictures of the finished area later, but for now here is a quick picture update:

Strawberries

We have had a lot of inquiries into when strawberry season will start for us, and we do apologize for the delay in this notification. This year we started a new system for growing strawberries. Future strawberry crops from KellerBerryFarm will be on raised beds of dual rows of strawberries covered in black plastic mulch (seen in the picture below). The benefits of growing specifically strawberries this way is numerous and has its advantages. Being a small farm with a small workforce, this is big news for us and eliminates timely/costly maintenance issues like weeding (as you can imagine). Last week we finished putting the remaining plants into the ground. In fact, we put thousands of little plants in the ground this year! Planting for this year was divided into two parts. The first area of strawberries was planted early enough that it will provide a crop of strawberries this year. These strawberries (shown below) will be ready starting June 29th. Because these plants will not be fully matted, the strawberries will be sold as pre-picked @ $2.25/lbs for this season, sold in quart containers or 6 qt flats. As you can imagine, the yield for this year will be leaner than previous years, so quantities will be limited. To place your order, please call 641-484-0802 for availability. Thank you!
